A Day in the Life of an Essential Woker: Walmart Employee

With everything that is going on in the world, it has been put into effect that only people with essential jobs can leave their homes. Some people don’t realize how hard those people work, how those people risk their lives everyday to make sure that you get what you need. Grocery store employees are fighting their hardest everyday to make sure you have what you need to stay safe. Maggie Moorhous, a cashier at Hiawatha Walmart says, “For us, it’s like Black Friday every day.”

If there isn’t toilet paper, or hand sanitizer, don’t come yelling at them. It isn’t their fault that there aren't any on the shelves. If you can only get a certain amount of something, don’t cuss at them, or say that it’s ridiculous. They are trying to spread out the supplies so that everyone can get what they need. If you take a look at any Walmart employee, you’ll see that they are all tired, they are all worn down, but they still pull on their vest, and a smile to come to work every day and to help serve you.

If you plan to go shopping, leave your children at home. Have just one member of your family do the shopping. It makes things go quicker, and you don’t have to worry about waiting on anyone either. People have been bringing in their entire families, which has caused Walmarts all over the world to enforce the rule of letting a certain amount of people in every square inch. “If people would use more common sense, we wouldn’t be forced to enact new, extreme rules,” said Jaime Arnesen, cashier at Hiawatha Walmart.

Once those doors close for the final time that night, every single employee is scrubbing away at any surface that a human hand may have touched so that it can get cleaned, and sanitized. Stockers are stocking the shelves with food and fresh supplies. It may not just be toilet paper. It’s also more important things, like bread, milk and eggs. The employees are putting their heads together to think of new ways to keep people apart and to make sure that they are maintaining social distance. While this may frustrate you as a community, this helps Walmart in keeping you all safe.

These are tough times that the world is living in, we haven’t had anything like this. That doesn’t mean we have to act like animals. Regardless if it is six feet apart, help people the best you can, and thank the people that are helping you. It makes their day go easier, and it makes everyone feel better at the end of the day.
