The Hiawatha girls basketball team is gearing up for the week as they host their HIT Tournament.

The tournament, which is in its 43rd year, features eight teams battling it out over three days for the championship title.

In the first round, played on Tuesday the 28th, the fourth-seeded Hiawatha will face fifth-seeded St. Mary’s at 8:00 p.m. Additionally, #1 Jackson Heights will play #8 Atchison, #3 Maranatha will play #6 Falls City, and #2 Horton will play #7 Marysville.

From then on, game times are dependent upon wins and losses. The tournament bracket can be found above, as well as on the USD 415 Facebook page.

Head Coach Brady Jasper shares his thoughts for the upcoming week: “We’re looking forward to another great tournament this year. It seems like it could be a very competitive field, that could feature some close games.”

“This tournament is extra special to us,” Jasper adds. “It’s nice to host your own tournament and have other teams come to our gym and our school. It gives us a chance to feel proud about the things we have in Hiawatha.” Assistant Coach Stacy Jasper adds her thoughts: “Hosting the Hiawatha Invitational is something I always look forward to… playing in the Roundhouse for a week makes it special.”

In addition to the tournament, the HIT also features a free throw and three point competition. Each team selects two players who are not on the tournament roster, and the players shoot between games and at halftimes. This year, the Red Hawks have selected freshmen Sutton Diller and Brynn Williams as their three point and free throw shooters, respectively.

Come and support your Hiawatha Redhawks in their home tournament this Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday!
