Senior year of high school is all full of lasts, and goodbyes. Athletes play their hardest on the fields that they have grown to love more than anything in the world, actors pour their souls onto the stage, and artists create until their hands can go no more. All the little things add up, making the memories bittersweet to look back on.
This year, however, was different. For the 2020 graduates, all of that was cut short. We didn’t get our Senior Prom, our last chance to step onto our field for our final game, our chance to display our artwork in shows, not to mention, our cap and gowns were handed to us in bags along with all of our items from our lockers. We walked out for Spring Break, not even realizing that that was going to be our final time inside that school. It was ripped right from underneath of us, quicker than we could even blink. Did we expect it? No. Are we learning to live with it? Sadly, yes, we are.
Many Seniors of Hiawatha High have some words of wisdom when asked what their opinions were about looking back on what was their Senior year. “I’m sure this won’t be the last time us seniors will ever see each other, but for the time being, it is still sad.” Hunter Moore says. Agreeing with that, Lillian Childs says, “When I said goodbye, I’ll see you again, I had no idea it was going to be the last time that I said it.”
For a lot of the Seniors, they have been together since they started school, and they almost become a second family, so being away from them is hard! Then there are the kids that move halfway through and its like they get adopted in, and then everything just becomes whole. With some of these kids, you’ll probably never see them again. Once this is all gone, they’ll leave for college, and you’ll never get to say your final goodbye, or give a final hug or handshake. While some of us may think this is a final goodbye, it really isn’t. “This is not goodbye, this is until next time,” Seth Bauerle states.
As we get closer to the end of the school year, something that all the seniors have always dreamed about is coming up. Graduation. Do we get it? Do we get to walk across the stage? Do we get our diploma in the mail? Will we get to have any type of celebration? These are all questions running through their heads as they see the “Congrats Class of 2020” supplies begin to show up on shelves of stores everywhere. Not only that, but it is also heartbreaking to think that they may never get to wear the cap and gown that they have waited so long to wear. For their name to get called, and to get their hand shook.
